Square Watermelons

Is anyone else just a little weirded out by square watermelons? Though the adage goes that you can’t fit a square peg into a round hole, apparently our hard-at-work agricultural scientists have figured out how to fit a round peg into a square hole. I get the fact that it’s great for Japan’s watermelon “economy” by making the formerly bulbous oblongoid easier to package, ship, store on groceries shelves and ultimately inside consumers’ refrigerators. But now they are anticipating the market for square-shaped watermelon boxes for personal watersquaremelon harvesting. You have to wonder, will it end with the watermelon? There is also clearly more space & value to be had out of creating, say… square cantaloupes, honeydews and hey, why stop there… what about stackable square apples, pears and oranges? What’s next, square balls?

ReplyVERY old news.
ReplyThey have been doing this for well over 20 years now.
That is weird. Never saw anything like it. If they grew these in a container it’s okay. If they genetically engineered them…creepy.
ReplyI think it was the Japanese who did this first?
Reply@jvon: As opposed to, um… Japan mentioned in my story?
